Watering potted plants in a garden

Plant care guide

Sun, water and weather, plant by plant.

How much light each plant needs, how often to water it, and how it copes with Noida's 45°C summers, humid monsoons and foggy winters.

Sunlight

How much light is enough?

Every plant below is marked with one of these four. Not sure what your spot gets? Watch it for a day: if sunlight falls straight on the leaves, that is direct sun.

Full sun

6+ hours of direct sun

Open terraces, south- or west-facing balconies and garden beds.

Partial sun

3 to 5 hours, ideally morning sun

East-facing balconies, or a terrace corner that gets afternoon shade.

Bright indirect

Lots of daylight, little direct sun

Within a metre or two of a bright window, or behind a sheer curtain.

Low light

No direct sun

North-facing rooms, offices and corners a few metres from a window. It still needs some daylight.

NCR weather

Four seasons, four routines.

What to change through the year in Noida, Delhi and Gurugram.

Feb to Mar

Spring

10–32°C

The best window of the year. Repot, prune, start feeding again and plant almost anything.

Apr to Jun

Summer

28–46°C

Hot, dry loo winds. Water early in the morning or after sunset, cover the soil in pots with dry leaves or cocopeat, and shade tender plants with green net. Skip repotting and heavy feeding.

Jul to Sep

Monsoon

26–36°C

Check the soil before you water. Make sure every pot drains, lift pots off the floor, and spray neem oil against fungus and pests. A great time to plant trees and hedges.

Oct to Jan

Autumn & winter

4–30°C

Peak flower season: plant petunias, dahlias, roses and chrysanthemums. Water less, stop feeding indoor plants, and cover tender plants on foggy, frosty nights.

Sunlight: Bright light near a window. A little morning sun is fine; harsh afternoon sun burns the leaves.

Through the seasons: Happy indoors all year. Keep it off hot window glass in May and June. Below 12°C in winter it stops growing, so water less.

Care steps

  • Give it a moss pole to climb. Supported plants grow bigger, more split leaves.
  • Wipe the big leaves every month to keep them clean and glossy.
  • Repot every two years in February or March, one size up, in a chunky, fast-draining mix.
